Professional Dog Training Services

From puppy training to behavior modification, our Professional Dog Trainer, Juliet Flint, is here to help!

Dog Training Style

Juliet is a balanced trainer with a strong emphasis on positive reinforcement and least intrusive, minimally aversive techniques for the Bemidji community. She focuses on empowering owners to understand how our dogs learn, why our dogs behave the way they do, and how we can modify behavior using approaches that make sense to dogs and everyday owners alike. Juliet keeps training fun, science-based, and accessible to owners of all skill levels.

Services

  • Cooperative Care – Training dogs to accept handling for (and even participate in) grooming, veterinary care, and other necessary “evils.”
  • Leash Reactivity – Specifically for dogs who are great with humans/other dogs when OFFLEASH but get overstimulated and reactive when they’re on a leashed walk.
  • Basic Obedience – Sit, down, stay, come, and hand target/touch cue.
  • Loose Leash Walking – Dogs learn to walk with their owner while keeping slack in the leash (no pulling).
    • Heel– A more formal version of loose leash walking.
  • Dog and Human Reactivity* – A dog learns to remain calm and controlled when in the presence of a common stimuli that normally makes them overstimulated and reactive.
  • Scent Work – A dog is taught to detect and locate a specific scent.
    • Scent-based enrichment games for house dogs
    • Shed Hunting
    • Blood Tracking
    • AKC Nose Work
  • Place Work – Training a dog to go to a specific place, such as a dog bed, mat, raised platform, or a place board, and remain there until released.
  • Clicker Training – Clicker training, or mark and reward, is a form of positive reinforcement dog training.
    • Verbal markers can be used in place of clicker training.
  • Off-Leash Recall – Teach a dog to come when called while off-leash.
  • Behavior Modification – Modifying undesirable behaviors such as jumping, over stimulation, anxiety, resource guarding, confidence building, and more to be replaced by more desirable – usually calmer – behaviors.
  • Canine Good Citizen Training – A ten-skill training program that focuses on teaching the basics of good manners and obedience, instilling the values of responsible ownership, and strengthening the bond between you and your dog at home and out in the community.

* Our trainer does not currently work with dogs who have an established bite history or aggression with intent to harm. If you are unsure about whether this applies to your dog, please call and we’d be happy to discuss your individual circumstances.

Meet the Dog Trainer, Juliet Flint

“I have six years of experience training and handling working dogs, three years of which I was apprenticing to train dogs for scent detection. I have been doing foster and rehabilitation work in our community for several years, and I have a passion for working with rescue dogs. I am an APDT and IAABC member, certified in Dog Obedience Basics, I have studied canine cognition and body language through the University of Edinburgh and I firmly believe that there is no such thing as a bad dog.  When I’m not training dogs, I am an avid hiker, reader, hobby taxidermist, and bushcraft enthusiast. I collect interesting words the way that some people collect stamps. My pair of working German Shepherds are my pride and joy. I have a background in social work, and I find people almost as fascinating as dogs.”
