Spring is finally starting to show itself, which means tick season is upon us. When the temperature is above 45 degrees, the ticks start to move. Now is a great time to start your flea & tick preventives.

We still offer Frontline Plus®, but we now also have another topical flea & tick product called Vectra 3D®. It not only kills fleas and ticks on contact, it repels them. The repellent aspect builds up on your dog, so the more times it is applied, the better it works. This makes it important to start applying your topical preventives before the ticks start to appear.

In addition to fleas and ticks, Vectra 3D® also repels and kills mosquitoes, biting and sand flies, lice and some mites. Ticks transmit diseases such as Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis. Flea infestations can lead to skin diseases, tapeworm infestation, and anemia. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm disease. Flies can cause skin issues as well as being very irritating to dogs.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about Vectra 3D®:

How does it repel?

The 3 main ingredients work together to kill fleas and ticks on contact and repel them by causing a “hot foot” reaction. Once parasites arrive on your dog, this reaction forces them to crawl away from the skin without biting.

How often do I need to apply the Vectra 3D®?

Vectra 3D® is a once a month topical application.

What if my dog gets wet?

After allowing it to dry for 2 hours, Vectra 3D® remains effective after swimming, regular bathing, and being out in the rain.

I have a new puppy; can I use it on him/her?

Vectra 3D® can be applied to puppies as young as 7 weeks.

Is it easy to apply?

We definitely like the new applicator. It is easier to remove from the packaging and to apply. Starting at the lower back, place the tip of the applicator next to the skin and squeeze the tube while traveling up the spine toward the shoulder blades. We’d be happy to demonstrate or even apply the first dose for you.

Can I use Vectra 3D® on my cat?

No. Vectra 3D® is for dogs only. The ingredients are not safe for cats. They do have a product for cats that works well on fleas, but it does not work on ticks. Do not allow your cat to come in contact with your dog until after the 2 hours drying period.
