What Is an “Emergency”?

Emergencies can happen at any time in many ways. Below is a high-level list of medical issues or symptoms that, according to the American Animal Hospital Association, trigger an immediate visit to your vet:

  • Loss of consciousness, breath, or heartbeat
  • Vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours
  • Possible broken bone
  • Difficulty breathing or obstructed airway
